General

Can I take your rental equipment outside of Kejimkujik NP?

Definitely! We even encourage it. We want more adventure, so take our gear and go where the adventure awaits you! May we suggest heading into the Tobeatic?

How many people can safely fit in a canoe?

All of our canoes have only two seats, however their carrying capacities range from 1350lbs to 1750lbs. A third adult may sit on the floor of the canoe, so long as there isn’t a dangerous amount of equipment also heading out in the boat. This decision is at the discretion of the Whynot Adventure Staff. Two adults and two small children may also take a canoe out, but only at the discretion of the Whynot Adventure Staff. At no time will guests be permitted to sit on the yoke or thwart (the two wooden cross-pieces) as these provide structural support and are too high for a safe center of gravity.

What is the difference between Royalex and Polyethylene?

In short, about 25lbs. Both Royalex and polyethylene are hull materials used to manufacture modern canoes. Royalex is much lighter and is preferred by backcountry paddlers who anticipate portaging their boats and equipment. The downside to Royalex is that it is not as durable or abrasion resistant as polyethylene boats, and it is twice as expensive to purchase. Royalex production ceased in April 2014. These boats will soon be relics…

Do you rent boats?

Yes, we do rent boats. As of spring, 2014 our fleet consists of 25 sixteen foot polyethylene Penobscots, 10 seventeen foot polyethylene Penobscots, and 10 sixteen foot ABS Penobscots. All of our canoes are manufactured by the Old Town canoe factory, located in Old Town, Maine, USA. The Penobscot hull is one that has been tried and tested for many decades and found to be a fine balance between tripping and recreational paddling.

We also rent 25 eleven foot polyethylene Huron single person kayaks, and 10 polyethylene Huron tandem kayaks. Our kayaks, too, have been manufactured by the Old Town canoe factory located in Old Town, Maine, USA. Our kayaks are best for recreational use, and therefore do not have gear bulkheads. Small loads (5-10L) can be placed behind the seat or between the paddlers legs.

Our canoe and tandem kayak rentals include 2 Personal Floatation Device’s (PFD’s), 2 paddles and a boater safety kit (15 meters of buoyant heaving line, bailer and whistle). Our single kayak rentals include 1 PFD, 1 paddle and a boater safety kit.

What is a guided adventure?

Our guided adventures are specially crafted wilderness outings facilitated by one of our professional and experienced guides. For example: Any of our guided canoe adventures have been preplanned by an expert guide. Canoes, paddles, safety equipment and any group equipment (i.e. kitchen, mess kit, tarps et cetera) will be provided by Whynot Adventure. Guests will be responsible for personal equipment (their clothing, toiletries, water bottle, flashlight, et cetera). The guide will provide route finding, risk management, natural interpretation, storytelling, assistance with camp set up, and all cooking and meal prep. And yes, your guide WILL do the dishes!

Our guided adventures have been designed for total beginners as well as experts just looking for a convenience or somewhere new to explore, so kick back and enjoy our signature back country lattes by the fire and let your guide do the worrying.

How long have you been in business?

Whynot Adventure and Keji Outfitters was launched in the spring of 2013 by Karlene Hauer and Cody Whynot. Both are graduates of post secondary adventure tourism programs and have been involved in the industry for nearly a decade, and both are passionate about providing an exceptional experience in southwest Nova Scotia. Cody has grown up exploring the waterways of the Tobeatic and Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, and is always happy to ‘talk shop’ regarding different routes and local history.

Insurance

Do I need special insurance?

No, you are not required to purchase special insurance, however if you have booked a guided adventure with us we recommend investing in trip cancellation insurance. From our experience about 10% of our guests need to cancel due to some unforeseen circumstance. Cancellation insurance can help protect you from cancellation fees.

Do I sign a waiver?

A waiver must be signed in order to participate in any Whynot Adventure or Keji Outfitters activity, transportation and adventure as well as to rent any of our equipment. By signing the waiver you are waiving certain rights, including the right to sue. Please read carefully!

Our waivers can only be signed by those of the age of majority (19 years old). All minors must have the waiver filled out and signed by a parent or legal guardian before they can participate in a WA or KO adventure, rental or transportation.

The waiver document is a legal document which contains several different parts: A Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risks, Indemnity Agreement and Jurisdiction Agreement. A copy can be found here. We recommend you familiarize yourself with the terms outlined in the waiver prior to making a reservation or arrival at Jake’s Landing.
