Whynot Adventure is looking for talented individuals to help with our guiding and rental business located at Jake’s Landing, Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site. We’re hoping to find ambitious, energetic wilderness loving people to help us facilitate our guest’s wilderness adventure.
We launched our guided trip program late in the spring of 2014 to a positive reception. With little to no marketing our trips began to sell which showed us a genuine interest in canoe tripping within Kejimkujik and the Tobeatic as well as our budding adventure company. We’ve already begun taking canoe trip reservations for the 2015 season and we’re looking to hire another canoe guide to help with the deployment of our canoe tripping program.
Our trips are typically 3-days/2-nights in length with group size ranging from 4 to 8 pax. Our tripping range is between Kejimkujik National Park and the Tobeatic wilderness area. The success of our trips hinges on gourmet backcountry cuisine, rich engagement of wilderness through natural and historical understanding of area and an experiential approach to adventure.
The workload of this position will change as reservations come and go. A guide’s wage (day rate) will apply while guiding on trip, however when no reservations exist and employment switches to the rental concession, an hourly wage will apply. Also, Whynot Adventure will provide all of the group camping equipment, however we expect that our guides have for their personal use their own tent, sleeping bag, thermarest, pfd, guide pack, and wilderness first responder first aid kit.
This position will require an in depth understanding of Whynot Adventure’s reservation and risk management systems as well as the ability to lift and manoeuver canoes and kayaks to and from the water’s edge. Our systems require a fair bit of paperwork, so thoughtful, neat, thorough and concise penmanship is required. As well, beyond the confines of the office we’ll expect that this position be able to assist guests into and out of the boats, demonstrate safe boating procedures and instruct proper paddling technique. We encourage all of our employees to spend as much time as possible exploring the park and familiarizing themselves with the local adventure opportunities.
It should be noted that the communities of Caledonia and Maitland Bridge are the nearest and would be most suitable for summer accommodation. Owning a vehicle is almost necessary to travel to and from work on a daily basis.
Employment perks include free use of WA adventure equipment and gear (depending on availability), as well as a shoulder season subsidy for park exploration.

Wilderness and remote first responder (80hr)
Paddle Canada (CKNS, or similar) paddling certification
Class 5 drivers license
NLS Bronze Cross
Prior experience in Kejimkujik and the Tobeatic
Knowledge and interest in natural history and park history
Adventure tourism diploma
